2. Corticosteroids:
- Prednisone or budesonide: These drugs are used to quickly reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms during flare-ups. However, they are generally not suitable for long-term use due to potential side effects.
3. Immunomodulators:
- Azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, methotrexate: These medications work by suppressing the immune system to reduce inflammation. They are often used for patients who do not respond well to other treatments or who require long-term maintenance therapy.
4. Biologics:
- Infliximab, adalimumab, vedolizumab: These drugs are targeted therapies that block specific proteins involved in the inflammatory process. Biologics are often prescribed for moderate to severe cases of Crohn’s disease and may be used when other medications are ineffective.
5. Antibiotics:
- Ciprofloxacin, metronidazole: Antibiotics may be used to treat infections associated with Crohn’s disease and, in some cases, to help reduce inflammation.
6. Nutritional Therapy:
- Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN): In certain cases, a liquid diet that provides complete nutrition without solid food may be recommended, especially for children or as a supplemental approach alongside other treatments.
7. Surgery:
- Resection or strictureplasty: Surgery may be necessary to remove damaged portions of the intestine, repair strictures, or address complications that do not respond well to medications.
